Math Coaching

Coaching cycles coming soon!

Struggling regularly in class?

Needing some hands-on assistance?

Want more than just simple homework help?

I'm your guy.

While tutoring focuses on help with a particular assignment, coaching encompasses so much more. I've seen far too many students rely on tutors who practically complete their homework or study guides for them. Students walk away having gained just a few tips in how to solve a few cookie-cutter problems, but their underlying issues persist. Everybody in a math class needs a few questions answered before an upcoming test - and I can meet that need with ease! But some students who struggle need more than a few tutorials. They need someone who can get in their shoes and coach them into stronger habits, equip them with critical thinking skills, and prep them for what they will face in class down the road.

The coaching program will include the following:

  • hands-on guidance - creating a "game plan" to get students back on track and stay the course
  • goal setting and management - regular check-ins to achieve goal and feedback for improvement
  • diagnostics - utilizing past performance and current class progress to create a customized learning plan
  • tutoring assistance - quality explanations of previous material not mastered and current material encountered
  • process skill development - training and teaching in critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, and communication skills (aligned with NCTM process standards, which are embedded in every grade-level math standard)
  • pre-teaching - preview of upcoming material and potential pitfalls to pave the way to success in future topics and assessments

How does it work?

  • One coaching cycle can be anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months, depending on the student's need. There is no obligation to continue if the student or parent no longer see the need for additional services.
  • An initial 1-on-1 meeting (intake) for introductions, to create a :"game plan" and set goals, as well as go over any previous assessments or current math needs.
  • Each coaching cycle will have a group composed of students of the same subject level (i.e. Geometry or Pre-Algebra) that will meet at least once per week. This meeting will cover topics similar amongst the group, including the development of process standards, general remediation/review, and laying the groundwork for future topics (pre-teach).  This also allows students to develop a sense of community, bounce ideas off of each other and refine their thinking by hearing the thought processes of others in a safe environment.
  • Students will also have the opportunity to schedule 1-on-1 or other small group meetings to get help for specific assignments, upcoming assessments, and checking in with progress toward meeting their goal(s).
  • Virtual sessions allow students from all over the US to meet without any commute. Busy schedules and extracurriculars can make life challenging. The convenience, along with the vast resources available through technology, make virtual sessions ideal for students. Check out some of my thoughts about virtual teaching in this FAQ related to the class sessions I offer for more info.

How can I get the most out of a coaching cycle?

Some of my own personal 'strengths' (from the Clifton Strengths Finder) that have been invaluable in my teaching career are Input, Context, and Connectedness. The more information and background I have to work off of, the better I do my job. Sending me images of past quizzes and homework, the current teacher's website or weekly planner, and just about anything related to their math class will help me develop an understanding of your student, where they've been and where they're going. Sending this information before our initial intake meeting allows me the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and dig deeper into the needs of your student. We can then set appropriate goals and build up your student's confidence in math through informed coaching.

Together, let's fill in those gaps and build a strong foundation for a powerful mind!
